WOMAN OF THE DESERT
Free Verse by Roger Born, Ridgecrest CA, 2000

She surprises you with her lush magic beauty.
Purple plains, sweet wandering streams, secret
canyons, majestic and mysterious mountains
- she has it all, the woman of the desert.

She opens your unsuspecting eyes to new
vistas and sudden distances which entice, excite
and fever your thoughts so that all your busy-ness
falls forgotten and neglected before her bright presence.

Nor are her charms wanting in the deep night, as the
high, bright silver moonlight falls on her distant valleys
revealing sacred delights, cradled between deep blue
silent mountains standing sentinel over her forever.

Overhead is the brightest star filled sky you have ever
known, with endless miriad stars looking down in their
celestial turning, bisected by the glowing galactic arm
spreading its milky seed from horizon to horizon.

Comes the dawn to own the night sky, with an errie,
ever growing glow of the very palest pink and gold,
to finally announce the Sun by painting all the clouds
in bright unearthly metallic and light riven hue.

Breathless waits her desert floor, soon to be a happy
home to bird song and whispering pines, as a wise
gentle breeze from somewhere takes the sleepiness
and night coldness far away. It is then that you know!

You know you that you have come Home to all this.
Your life before is like a dream. Your life to come
is a treasure of beauty, surprise and exploration,
as you joyfully embrace the woman of the desert.

All the emptiness of your life she will fill with
bright burning days and quiet endless nights,
as you revel in her beauty and run to discover
all the hidden treasure of her mountain and plain.

You are welcome here with her, to know her
high towers, to quench your thirst at the deep
wells of her bosom and to satisfy your hunger
at the fertile valley of her wide fruitful plain.

Her kinfolk are there. Considerate people,
free and independent. Unassuming, gentle
people, rightly so, well learned her ways, who
stand ready with a friendly hand for a newcomer.

She is the woman of the desert. You will ever
be delighted and satisfied with what she gives,
but you will never know all of her, though you
spend the rest of your days uncovering her secrets.

She is the woman of the desert. In her bosom
you will raise your family and find genuine
contentment at her table, surrounded by new
friends who share her magic under the widening sky.
